Depression & Anxiety Therapy

At Evolving Therapy, we understand how challenging life can become under the shadow of depression and anxiety. That’s why we’ve tailored our counselling and treatment strategies to help you rediscover the motivation, perspective, and joy you may have lost. Our approach, grounded in evidence-based practices like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), is designed to bring tangible changes to your life.

Trauma & PTSD Recovery

If you’re carrying the weight of traumatic experiences, our Trauma & PTSD Recovery service is here to support you. Our specialised therapy techniques focus on more than just managing symptoms—they aim to guide you through a healing journey, moving from grief to recovery. We’re here to help you overcome the feelings of anxiety, fear, and hopelessness that often follow traumatic events.

TeleHealth Services

Recognising the need for flexibility and accessibility in therapy, we offer comprehensive TeleHealth services. Whether you prefer the convenience of online sessions or require telephone counselling, our aim is to make mental health support accessible to you, no matter where you are. All TeleHealth appointments are fully Bulk Billed, ensuring that your path to wellness is both convenient and cost-effective.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a cornerstone of our therapeutic practices at Evolving Therapy. This approach focuses on identifying and changing dysfunctional emotions, behaviours, and thoughts through a goal-oriented, systematic process. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, or phobias, CBT offers a path to recovery that is both structured and personalised to your unique challenges.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) offers a unique lens through which to view and address mental health issues—focusing on the interpersonal relationships and social contexts of your life. IPT is particularly effective if you’re experiencing difficulties related to relationships, life transitions, or social isolation. It emphasises improving your interpersonal skills and adapting to your current life roles and situations, fostering a healthier, more connected life.

Behavioural Therapy

Our Behavioural Therapy service is designed to address a wide range of psychological concerns through techniques that reinforce desired behaviours and eliminate undesired ones. Based on learning theory, this approach is especially beneficial for treating phobias, compulsive behaviours, and other behavioural issues. We’re here to help you make the behavioural changes necessary for a fulfilling and empowered life.

In my career, I have worked as an EAP counselor in private practice, facilitated specialist mental health programmes, and excelled in lifestyle recovery coaching. My clinical approach is supportive, empathetic, and non-judgmental, specialising in treating anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, emotional neglect, motivation, self-esteem issues, PTSD, veteran-specific trauma, and personality disorders. I prefer using treatment modalities like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), including both behavioural and cognitive interventions, skills training, psychoeducation, stress management, and motivational interviewing. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of delivering social work lectures to postgraduate students at James Cook University, always aiming to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Highlighting my career, I was honoured to be a keynote speaker at the NQ Branch during the 75th-anniversary celebration of AASW.

Testimonials

I am having a brilliant experience working with Abel. He is incredibly experienced with lots of tools for me to add to my tool belt, and he’s really personable and fun to work with.
Rebecca Taylor
Abel has honestly helped so much even in the short time we’ve been in contact, teaching me to to properly process what happens in life

Tyson Harris
Dr. Abel is an amazing man. He understands what you’re going through and tries his hardest to give you strategies to deal with your pain And gives you tools to deal with anxiety and stress issues.
Victoria Smith
Great active listener! I wasn't expecting to continue receiving therapy after the initial session, as I thought there would be a focus on past problems. However, I was pleasantly surprised when Abel introduced me to Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). SFBT was new to me & sounded exactly like what I had been looking for & needed. I've always been able to identify what my problems are & deal with them. However, I've had difficulty finding solutions on how to continue dealing with the problems or having a step by step process for tackling them well & efficiently. I'm glad I decided to stick with Abel & SFBT.
Peter Wilson
First session and Abel made a lot of sense with what he was talking about in regards to myself and has already helped greatly.
Ruth Thompson
I'm learning a lot. Abel is very supportive and helps greatly toward understanding my issues and how to resolve them in a healthy way.
James Martin
Abel is a fantastic therapist who provides practical tools, stories and learning for the situations presented. I am already seeing a positive impact in my life after my sessions with Abel.
